Interpreting the Trends in China’s Cat Food E-Consumption

The “Cat Economy” has set off a wave of cat-related consumption since 2016. 80% of the cat owners have ever purchased cat food or cat-use items through Taobao and Tmall, followed by JD, Boqii, Goumin, Epet and Amazon. Sales growth through Taobao and Tmall is almost 3 times the average growth of overall e-shopping platforms. Based on substantial shopping data, this article tries to reveal the new trends of cat food consumption in China from detailed aspects including age and gender distribution, habits and preference, etc. Consumption Upgrading Cat food represent a higher percentage in terms of sales value and Tmall has higher user percentage than Taobao. China Eliminates the Feed Additive Uses of Chemical Growth-promoting Antibiotics

On 9 Jul 2019, the Chinese Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Affairs issued the MoARA Announcement 194 to terminate the feed additive uses of all growth-promoting agents except the traditional Chinese medicines. The move is part of the “National Action Plan against Bacterial Resistance (2016-2020)” and growth-promoting antibiotics that used on both human and animal were foremost obsoleted. Public data shows the pet population in China has exceeded 168 million and China is the 3rd largest dog keeper and the 2nd largest cat keeper worldwide. These claims will require supporting documentation, including openly published literature, textbook, formula composition and test data. 82 Batches of Food Rejected by China Customs in May 2019

GAC seized 82 batches of substandard foods imported from 19 countries/regions in May. Hygiene problems, food additives and expired foods were major issues. On June 25, General Administration of Customs released the list of non-compliant food products rejected by GAC during port inspection in May.[1] 82 batches of foods imported from 19 countries/regions had issues.
