The new standard revises the maximum level of lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, chromium, benzo[a]pyrene, and polychlorinated biphenyls in foods. Foods are now subject to stricter limits of contaminants, especially the maximum level of lead. The lead limits in most foods are tightened, including infant formula, dairy products, meat and products thereof, etc. On July 28, 2022, China’s National Health Commission (NHC) approved 36 national food safety standards and 3 amendments, involving standards for food additives, food contact materials, beverages, concentrated milk products, cheese, etc. What particularly worth mentioning is the heavily watched GB standards for contaminants, which will come into effect on June 30, 2023.
