Macau Sets Standard for the Use of Food Coloring

Takehome: Macau released a new regulatory standard for the use of food colorings, including 17 tar/artificial pigments and 28 natural and other pigments. On November 13, 2017, the chief executive of Macau released a supplementary administrative regulation standardizing the use of food colorings. This regulation defines the meaning of food coloring and stipulates that it’s not allowed to be added in: raw or unprocessed meat, poultry, game, aquatic, vegetable or fruit products but except for the use of marked purpose or in the skin of citrus fruits formula foods for infants and follow-ups, infant formula foods for special medical purpose use and complementary food for infants and young children. Besides, it also lists 17 kinds of tar/artificial pigments including lemon yellow, quinoline yellow and carmine 4R and 28 kinds of natural and other pigments including caramel colour, chlorophyll and xanthophyll that are approved to use in food. Taiwan Advocates Use of Front of Package Nutrition Labeling

Takehome: Taiwan FDA encourages manufacturers to use front of package nutrition labeling on all prepackaged food. On November 15, 2017, Taiwan FDA released an announcement advocating the use offront of package nutrition labeling (FoP), which is a graphic nutrition label that can be tagged anywhere on the front of package. China Extends Food for Special Medical Purposes Grace Period by 1 Year

Takehome: The grace period of FSMP product registration is extended to Jan 1st, 2019 On November 22, 2017, China CFDA announced a one year extension of the FSMP registration grace period. From Jan 1st, 2019, only CFDA registered FSMPs can enter the Chinese market. Domestic and imported FSMP products which are manufactured prior to December 31, 2018 can be sold in China until expiration date. China to Renew Pesticide Residue Trial Guideline

On 10 Nov 2017, China ICAMA opened a 30-day consultation on the “Guideline on Pesticide Residue Trials on Crop”. As a vital component of pesticide management, residue trial provides scientific justification for MRL development and good agricultural practice for pesticide application, which is of great significance in ensuring food safety. In 2004, the residue trial guideline was initially released in the form of NY/T2004. It specified the nomenclature, definition and the general requirement for the experiment design, performance of study, sampling, sample storage, residue analysis, recording and report of study. China refined the trial site distribution/selection requirements in 2016 and promulgated a new pesticide regulation in 2017.
