At present, Japan does not commercially cultivate genetically modified (GM) crops. However, it does import GM crops that are resistant to herbicides and pests from the United States and other countries for processing and feed. To ensure the safety of GM foods, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) has made it mandatory under the Food Sanitation Act since 2001 to review their safety before they can be sold in the market. GM foods that have not been confirmed to be safe are prohibited from being sold.

This webinar aims to interpret GM foods requirements in Japan. The speaker will introduce the regulatory framework and labeling requirements of GM foods in Japan, and provide guidance on how to pass the MHLW safety inspection and what information is required. In addition, this webinar will address frequently asked questions about GM food.
