ECHA: One Hazardous Chemical Added to SVHC Candidate List

On June 10, 2022, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) added N-(hydroxymethyl)acrylamide(CAS No. 924-42-5) to the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) under EU REACH as it may cause cancer or genetic defects. With the addition of NMA, the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) now comprises 224 substances that may have serious effects on human health or the environment. (Read more)

European Commission Revised the Definition of Nanomaterials

On June 10, 2022, the European Commission revised the definition of nanomaterials in a new Recommendation. The new definition replaces the initial definition of 2011. The changes were developed following a comprehensive review, and should allow easier and more efficient implementation, but will not significantly affect the scope of identified nanomaterials. ECHA: Immediate Risk Management Suggested for 300 Harmful Chemicals

On June 17, 2022, the European Chemicals Agency announced that ECHA’s fourth report under its Integrated Regulatory Strategy had been released. Assessing chemicals in groups has sped up authorities’ work, with assessments for 1,900 substances finalized in 2021. For around 300 of these, risk management actions could begin immediately. European Commission Welcomes Political Agreement Reached on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Waste

The European Commission welcomes the political agreement reached on June 20 of 2022 between the European Parliament and the Council on the Commission’s proposal to protect human health and the environment from Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) – a set of very harmful chemicals that can be found in some waste streams. Existing limits have been tightened for five substances and new limits have been agreed for four new substances. (Read more)

ECHA Selects New Executive Director, Implying Future Key Actions

On 22 June, the Management Board of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) selected Dr. Sharon McGuinness as ECHA’s next Executive Director. As part of the appointment procedure, she will make a statement before the European Parliament and answer questions from its members. This is tentatively scheduled for 4 July 2022. (Read More)

EPA Issues First Test Order Under National Testing Strategy for PFAS in Commercial Fire Fighting Foam and Other Uses

On June 6, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap issued the first in a series of Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) test orders to require companies to conduct and submit testing on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). When EPA announced its Strategic Roadmap to confront PFAS contamination nationwide, the agency also released the National PFAS Testing Strategy to help identify PFAS data needs and require testing to fill those gaps. EPA Announces New Drinking Water Health Advisories for PFAS Chemicals

On June 15, 2022, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released four drinking water health advisories for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the latest action under President Biden’s action plan to deliver clean water and Administrator Regan’s PFAS Strategic Roadmap. EPA also announced that it is inviting states and territories to apply for $1 billion – the first of $5 billion in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law grant funding – to address PFAS and other emerging contaminants in drinking water, specifically in small or disadvantaged communities. (Read more)

Canada Publishes the Draft Framework for the Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials

Colombia Starts Registration of Hazardous Chemical Substances

On May 31, 2022, Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce (MINCIT) issued the Circular 18 announcing the launch of the online registration system for industrial chemical substances identified as hazardous according to GHS. The deadline for companies to registerer their chemicals is May 30, 2025. The first National Inventory of Industrial Chemical Substances will be created based on the chemicals registered over the three years. (Read More)
