ChemCon Asia 2019 Successfully Concludes in Time for K-REACH Pre-Registration Deadline
June, 2019. Hangzhou, China. This week one of East Asia’s most thriving cities in Asia-Pacific, Seoul, opened its doors to this year’s ChemCon Asia Conference. The global event lasted a total of five days, with Pre-conference workshops, seminars and specialized sessions and an exhibition center. REACH24H reinforced its support to this internationally recognized event as partner and through the contribution of its experts, who presented on a series of topics during the conference.
With approximately 280 participants involved, including representatives from government agencies and industry experts gathered in the capital of South Korea, the topic which kicked off the 2019 event was K-REACH and the pre-registration of chemical substances. It is worth noting that the deadline for the pre-registration period will actually take place at the end of this week, thus becoming one of the main areas of interest for businesses operating in the region.
The REACH24H team was led by the consulting group’s U.S.A General Manager, Mr. Robert Kiefer, who presented on two topics and chaired two other sessions, a Roundtable on Enforcement and a session on Chemical Control Management in The Americas.
On his Compare/Contrast Global Consumer Goods Regulations session, Mr. Kiefer looked at different global regulatory schemes including RoHS initiatives worldwide, UN GHS implementation for consumer products, U.S. (FHSA and CA Prop 65), EU REACH and CLP, China and S. Korea. On the GHS Implementation in Asia-Pacific session, focus shifted to this region, with Mr. Kiefer providing compliance strategies to overcome the differences in the UN GHS versions and explaining building blocks adopted, and differences in SDS and labeling requirements.
Two other experts from REACH24H China joined this event’s conference sessions, with Ms. Penny Peng offering a thorough Overview of Regulations on the Management of Chemicals and Updates on the proposed New Chemical Substance Notification Scheme (NSCN) and Mr. Matt Lyu giving a presentation on Chemical Safety Management in China. Ms. Peng specifically focused on the draft Regulation on Chemical Substance Environmental Risk Assessment and Control, issued on 8 January 2019, the screening of existing substances and possible changes in the management of new chemicals. The speaker reminded the audience of the relevance of “MEP Order No.7”), currently under revision.
Since the management of chemicals in China remains a complex issue due to the many laws and regulations, competent authorities, and chemicals activities involved, Matt organized his presentation chemical management according to four major aspects: environmental protection, production safety and occupational health, public security, and consumer products safety. Mr. Lyu final assessment of the topic summed up chemical management as “only the tip of the iceberg in the universe of compliance challenges faced by chemical enterprises”. Judging from the positive feedback and active interest shown by participants more events like these are truly needed, which focus on the different aspects of compliance required by companies operating in the challenging and ever-growing markets of Asia-Pacific.
