EPA Takes Action Against Two Companies to Halt Sales of Unregistered Pesticide Products

In August 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) took significant enforcement actions against two companies to halt the sales of unregistered pesticide products.

Penalty on RBL Products Inc.

On August 5, the EPA announced a settlement with RBL Products Inc., located at 6040 Russell St., Detroit, Michigan, for allegedly selling unregistered pesticide products in violation of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). The company has ceased production and sales of these products and will pay a $584,000 penalty. The products in question include G200 Surface Sanitizer and Disinfectant, GClean G200 Surface Sanitizer and Disinfectant Wipes, and Isopropyl Alcohol Wipes, all used for sanitizing and disinfecting hard surfaces. Urging to Menard Inc.

Subsequently, on August 15, the EPA ordered Menard Inc. of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to immediately stop the sale and distribution of two unregistered products: “Antimicrobial Filter” and “Allergen Filter.” These products were treated with unregistered pesticides and sold online, with claims on the company’s website that they could or should be used against COVID-19. Under FIFRA, products that claim to kill, destroy, prevent, or repel bacteria or viruses are considered pesticides and must go through the EPA’s registration process to ensure they perform as intended prior to distribution or sale. The EPA will not register a pesticide until it determines that the product does not pose an unreasonable risk to human health or the environment when used according to label directions.
