Regulation on bisphenol A (BPA) will be modified by EU
The EU has proposed a draft regulation which has been circulated by the WTO, it claims that the migration limitation of BPA will be changed from 0.6mg/kg to 0.05 mg/kg of food. This specific migration limitation is also suitable for coating and varnished.
The draft regulation claims that BPA is used in the manufacture of certain materials and articles intended to come into contact with food, such as polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins used in varnishes and coatings. Small quantities of BPA can migrate into the food from the material or article when they are in contact with food, resulting in some exposure to BPA for consumers of those foods.
According to this draft, the limitation of BPA in the EU No 10/2011 list will change as follows:
At the same time, the notified draft also sets out the criteria for verification of compliance concerning varnishes and coatings, as well as laying down the requirements for the written declaration of compliance (DoC) for varnished or coated materials and articles.
The proposed date of this draft will adopt at September 2016. The draft will come into effect after 20 days, following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union (The products only could be sold for six months after the regulation come into effect.)
